Art in the Alley

The art in Steamboat Springs is spilling into the alleyways, especially now that two local artists – Jill Bergman and Ann Feldman – have opened The Alley Gallery and Art Studios. The two artists have taken over the space at 729 Lincoln Ave. in the alley above Del Mezcal and have transformed it into a studio-slash-gallery space where they can simultaneously work and welcome visitors.
“We think that this space is unique because we’ll be able to show our process to people from the very beginning stages all the way through completion,” Ann says. “You never know from one day to the next what we’ll be working on, but we hope that people will enjoy stopping in and learning about how we make our art.”
Born and raised in New Orleans, Ann is an oil painter who now resides in Steamboat. While she is mostly working on landscapes now, her new studio space is lined with portraits from the portraiture classes that she used to teach.
In the studio down the hall, Jill will be working on carving, printing and painting linocuts. “I love doing wildlife,” she says. “I just finished a lynx that’s about to get printed.” Each of her pieces is carved into a large sheet of linoleum by hand, then is inked and printed to create a piece of graphic original art.
The space will be open during First Friday Artwalk each month as well as business hours Wednesday-Saturday. “We hope that people will enjoy visiting us there and seeing what goes into creating our art,” Ann says. “We love to share the making of our art and talking about it with visitors.”
